Sheffield United: Duo poised to miss Millers clash after answering the international call

George Long and Sean McGinty will miss Sheffield United’s South Yorkshire derby with Rotherham next month after being selected for international duty, writes James Shield.

United goalkeeper Long has been named in the England squad which begins its UEFA Championship qualifying campaign against Moldova on September 5 before facing Finland in Tampere four days later.

McGinty is scheduled to begin preparing for the Republic of Ireland’s Group Six tie with Germany 48 hours after England’s match at the Madejski Stadium; the same afternoon as David Weir’s side visit New York Stadium.

It remains unclear whether United will ask their FAI counterparts to delay the 20-year-old’s arrival until after that match although Weir, who won 69 caps for Scotland, is unlikely to sanction any course of action which threatens the full-back’s involvement in the meeting with Horst Hrubesch’s team, also on September 9. That match takes place at The Showgrounds, Sligo.

Rotherham could also be missing two influential players - Michael O’Connor and Kari Arnason - after they were selected for World Cup qualification duty by Northern Ireland and Iceland respectively.
