SHEFFIELD United possess both the guts and the goals to win Saturday’s League One play-off final.

Nick Montgomery, the longest-serving member of Bramall Lane’s squad, made the claim as the countdown towards this weekend’s clash with Huddersfield Town at Wembley continued last night.

Circumstances have conspired to savage United’s attacking options of late, with Chris Porter and Richard Cresswell now the only experienced centre-forwards at manager Danny Wilson’s disposal.

But Montgomery insisted Town will be making a grave mistake if they under-estimate United’s ability to overcome adversity, saying: “We’ve scored goals all season. We’ve got good players and we all want to get back to the Championship.

“We’ve got another 90 minutes to go and possibly extra time. It’s about one performance.

“The lads could have folded against Stevenage after not going up automatically but we kept going to get through to this tie.”

Montgomery added: “Losing some vital players at important times of the season would be a big blow for anybody.

“To grind through two tough games against Stevenage is a good achievement but it means nothing if we don’t win the final.”

United seemed destined to secure an automatic promotion berth before being denied second place by Sheffield Wednesday during a dramatic end to the 2011/12 campaign.

However, they recovered to win their semi-final with Stevenage and set up the clash with Town.

Cresswell missed the second leg of that triumph with an eye infection.

But Montgomery said: “He’ll be back fit and everyone will be competing for places.

“Cressy is a player you have in your side week in week out because he’s been outstanding all season and works his socks off.”

Problems in both his personal and professional life have hampered Montgomery’s progress this term.

But, with his twin daughters now fit and well after being born prematurely, he said: “Having two poorly children was difficult for my wife and I but I’m not moaning because they are the best things to happen to me.”
