Tony McMahon, the Sheffield United defender, could return to training early next month, manager David Weir has confirmed.

McMahon has been absent since April after succumbing to a long-standing Achilles complaint. Despite missing all of United’s pre-season outings so far, Weir revealed the 27-year-old is making progress in his fitness battle.

“Tony should hopefully start working again within a few weeks or so,” he said. “Working with us, the rest of the lads, that is.

“He seems to be moving along in the right direction and we’ll monitor how he goes. But, as always, we won’t take any risks with injuries like that.

“Everything he does is being done thoroughly and in the proper fashion.”

Together with winger Ryan Flynn, McMahon has been one of the most notable absentees throughout United’s preparations for the new League One campaign which begins when Notts County visit Bramall Lane on August 2.

Flynn watched from the bench as Weir’s team beat Bury 3-1 last weekend after recovering from the hip injury he aggravated when United reported back for training earlier this month.

“Ryan is okay now,” Weir said. “If he’d have done a little bit more in terms of full training then we’d probably have used him (at Gigg Lane) but we want to do things properly.

“It’s good to have him here and with us though because he’s a good player with lots to offer.”
