Mark Howard says Sheffield United have rediscovered their swagger after dumping West Ham out of the Capital One Cup, writes James Shield.

And, irrespective of tomorrow’s result against Preston North End, the former Arsenal goalkeeper is convinced Tuesday’s result at the Boleyn Ground can inspire the performances required to help Nigel Clough’s side seize control of this season’s race for the Championship.

United, who beat Aston Villa and Fulham en route to the FA Cup semi-finals last term, also climbed from 21st to seventh in the League One table following Clough’s appointment 10 months ago and Howard told The Star: “Once again we’ve shown we’ve got the grit and determination to beat the top teams and so hopefully winning down there will really help us kick-on.

“We’ve shown before that success in the league and the cup can mix. We want to try and prove that again.”

Howard added: “Experiencing the atmosphere when you win the big games gives you even more hunger and determination to do well. Our end was packed down there (at West Ham) and celebrating in front of our fans when it was finished leaves you in awe of just how big this club really is.

“We love it and I’m sure they want some more of that too.”
