Stuart McCall could persuade Motherwell centre-forward Michael Higdon to join him at Bramall Lane if the former Scotland midfielder becomes Sheffield United’s next manager.

McCall, who was last night locked in talks with the South Yorkshire club’s hierarchy about taking charge next term, transformed Higdon into the SPL’s most prolific marksman after capturing the 29-year-old from St Mirren two seasons ago.

And with the player admitting the outcome of those discussions is likely to decide whether he remains at Fir Park, United will consider offering him a return to England should McCall be unveiled as Danny Wilson’s permanent successor.

Higdon, who started his career with Crewe Alexandra, becomes a free agent later this summer.

United opened negotiations with McCall yesterday after receiving permission to approach him about the role Wilson vacated last month.

The Star understands that Motherwell, who have previously fended-off several approaches for his services, gave United the green light when McCall indicated he wanted to explore the possibility of rejoining the club he left in 2007.

Chris Morgan is among those also interviewed for the role after expressing a desire to take charge on a permanent basis following the recent League One play-off semi-final against Yeovil Town.

Higdon has scored 27 goals in his previous 43 appearances for Motherwell.
