Sheffield United are tailing Central Coast Mariners goalkeeper Mathew Ryan, the Sheffield Telegraph understands.

Australian international Ryan is regarded as one of the hottest young prospects in Australian football, and has had recent trials with Tottenham Hotspur, West Brom and Rangers.

He has also attracted interest from French side Lille, and an un-named Danish club.

But sources in Australia have told this newspaper that the young goalkeeper could soon be invited for a trial with United.

Former United midfielder Nick Montgomery is, of course, currently with the Mariners, and Kevin McCabe is a club director.

United boss Chris Morgan, meanwhile, has backed the club’s youngsters to play a big part in their impending Play-Off campaign: “In the play-offs everyone will have a part to play; we need a good blend of youth and experience, but most of all we need legs,” he said.

United will produce a special 3D programme for Saturday’s game against Preston North End.
