Paddy McCarthy has revealed Sheffield United is the “only” club which could have persuaded him to drop into League One, writes James Shield.

And the Crystal Palace defender, who yesterday joined Nigel Clough’s side on emergency loan, admitted former United manager Neil Warnock was instrumental in pushing through the move.

Speaking ahead of this afternoon’s game against Chesterfield, McCarthy told The Star: “There aren’t many teams I’d have dropped down two divisions for but this is one of them. In fact, it’s probably the only one.

“I’ve spoken with the manager (Clough) and met the rest of the lads. There are players here who should be a level above at least.

“Hopefully I can play a part in making sure that happens. The ground, the training complex, the way its set-up behind the scenes and the video analysis, I’ve been very impressed by what I’ve seen because everything is geared-up for success.”

McCarthy is initially scheduled to spend at month at Bramall Lane but confirmed that “will be reviewed” at a later date.

“Neil was a massive part in me coming here,” he added. “Neil described what a great club this is and it took about two minutes to decide.

“He said I’d be really well looked after and that it’s a great place to come and play. There was interest from elsewhere but what he explained, how he talked about this place, and knowing myself what a good squad and staff there is here, well, that made up my mind.

“I’m itching to get started. I can’t wait to get out there and play.”
