Nigel Adkins is refusing to press the panic button in the transfer market despite the lack of new arrivals at Bramall Lane, writes James Shield.

But Adkins, who has dismissed suggestions Sheffield United need a major overhaul to compete for promotion, acknowledged “a few positions” need addressing before next month’s deadline.

The former Southampton and Scunthorpe manager, who took charge of the League One club six weeks ago, is known to be targeting a centre-half and centre-forward.

“Yes, there are a few positions we need to look at,” Adkins said. “That’s clearly obvious to everybody.

“We’re waiting for the right opportunities. Because it’s more important to bring the right people in rather than doing things for the sake of it.

“We don’t need that. It’s not about numbers.

“It’s about balancing the squad. Making sure that anyone who comes here can make a difference to that group.”

Martyn Woolford became Adkins’ first acquisition since taking charge six weeks ago when he signed a two year contract on Tuesday. Talks over the future of Billy Sharp are continuing after Adkins revealed the Leeds striker “dreams” of rejoining United following two previous spells in South Yorkshire.

Uwe Rosler, Adkins’ counterpart at Elland Road, has admitted to possessing a “surplus” of attacking options and named the 29-year-old in the squad which visited Tadcaster Albion for a friendly earlier this week while he oversaw a warm-up fixture against York City.
