Karl Robinson, the MK Dons manager, has warned his players must eradicate the defensive errors which have blighted their start to new League One campaign or risk undermining the club’s hopes of challenging for promotion.

Robinson, whose side faced Sunderland in the Capital One Cup last night, issued the challenge ahead of this weekend’s visit to Sheffield United.

Dons have taken six points from their opening four matches of the season - two than David Weir’s team - and Robinson, despite being encouraged by draws against Preston North End and Bristol City, said: “We shouldn’t be gifting goals to opposition. We have a lot more to come from us.

“Our goals have to be wonder-goals and well worked. But you look at Preston and Bristol City - they’re hot favourites to go up and we’re disappointed about getting a point from each.”

Dons will make the journey north hoping to record their first win at Bramall Lane but with Dean Lewington’s availability shrouded in doubt, Robinson added: “We’ve been without Ben Reeves, Dean Lewington and Tom Flanagan. It’s difficult to keep patching players up.”
