Marc McNulty, the Sheffield United striker, has had a protective mask fitted as he steps up his return from a facial injury.
McNulty sustained the injury after an incident in a Scottish nightclub, and United boss Nigel Clough confirmed that police are investigating.
And, speaking ahead of this afternoon’s League One clash with Oldham Athletic, Clough said: “We hope Marc and Michael [Higdon, hamstring] will return next week.
“Marc is having his mask fitting, with a view to training next week. We don’t know how long he will wear it... I suppose it depends how much better looking it makes him!
“But seriously, he’ll wear it as long as the surgeons deem it necessary. And then we will extend that a little bit longer, just to protect him.”
Clough reported no fresh injury concerns after Tuesday night’s FA Cup first-round replay win over Crewe, and Paddy McCarthy will return after suspension.
“We are trying to keep everybody fresh with the amount of games we have got, particularly with the midweek games,” Clough added.
“We managed to rest Jose [Baxter] the other night and Jamie Murphy got ten minutes rest at the end, too.”
