Sheffield United manager David Weir has outlined the qualities Simon Lappin will bring to Bramall Lane’s first team squad, writes James Shield.

Lappin reported for duty at the Redtooth Academy earlier this week with officials at both United and parent club Cardiff City hopeful his loan move will be processed ahead of tonight’s League One fixture against Crawley Town.

The 30-year-old’s proposed transfer is subject to international clearance by the Football Association of Wales and Weir said: “Simon is experienced, he’s had a level of success in this division before so he know it inside out.

“He’s a great addition to the options we have already got and can play in a number of positions including full-back and midfield.”

Lappin, who helped Norwich City earn back to back promotions before joining City in January, could make his United debut against the visitors from Sussex. Richie Barker’s side arrive eighth in the table while United are bottom after losing at Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend.

Weir, who confirmed Shaun Miller reported no ill-effects following his outing in a behind closed doors friendly with Bradford City on Tuesday, insisted United demonstrated “real signs of progress” at Molineux.

But he acknowledged only “results will back up what we are saying.”

“From a football standpoint, and from other people we’ve spoken too, there’s positive movement,” he added. “For instance, at Wolves we spent longer in possession, were winning the second ball and we looked like a team, like everyone knew their job and were taking responsibility for it.”
