Chris Porter, the Sheffield United centre-forward, has warned Nigel Clough’s side are not safe yet despite scoring a major victory in their battle to avoid relegation at Colchester in midweek, writes James Shield.

United visit League One rivals MK Dons tomorrow hoping to record a seventh straight victory in all competitions following Tuesday’s win at the Weston Homes Community Stadium.

That result lifted them to 12th place, their highest position since August, ahead of the meeting with Karl Robinson’s team.

But Porter, whose late penalty catapulted United up the rankings, insisted the congested nature of the table means they can still not afford to relax.

“It’s unbelievable really,” he said. “Things are so tight and there are so many clubs who could still get sucked in.

“When you think that, in the space of seven days we’ve gone from being in the bottom four to half way, then that says it all.

“The way we’re playing we should get some more wins but we’re not safe yet. I’m sure we’ll get there though if we carry on like this.”

Porter heads to stadium:mk searching for his ninth goal of the season, and fourth in as many outings, after enjoying a major upturn in form following Clough’s appointment four months ago. The two men previously worked together at Derby County before resurrecting their partnership when the 47-year-old took charge at Bramall Lane.

“The self-belief is there right the way through the squad,” Porter, reflecting on events in Essex, said. “Those of us on the bench knew that we’d get a chance if we came on because of the way the lads were playing and that’s and that’s a nice feeling to have.

“We’re grinding opponents down. The defence is solid, the midfield are controlling things and the forwards are getting on the scoresheet.

“What we’ve got to do is make sure that continues.”
