ONE TO WATCH

Kevan Hurst started his career with Sheffield United and made his debut for the club, during a League Cup tie against Queens Park Rangers, in September 2003. He joined Southend in 2012 after leaving Walsall and can name the likes of Chesterfield, Scunthorpe and Carlisle among his former clubs. Hurst, aged 30, can play anywhere across the midfield although his preferred position is on the wing. United received £200,000 when he swapped Bramall Lane for Glanford Park.

HISTORY LESSON

Tomorrow’s game between Sheffield United and Southend will be the first time these two teams have met since January 1997 when the hosts triumphed 3-0 at Bramall Lane. Earlier that season, Southend prevailed 3-2 at Roots Hall. The visitors, who gained promotion from League Two via the play-offs last season, last tasted success at this stadium in December 1988 when the match ended 2-1 in their favour. Southend went on to complete the ‘double’ over United during the 1988/89 campaign.

MAN IN THE MIDDLE

Scott Duncan (Northumberland): Duncan, who averages 2.75 cautions per game this season, has not sent-off a player since February and took charge of Sheffield United’s JP Trophy tie at Hartlepool in September.
