Crystal Palace will not block Nigel Clough’s attempt to extend Paddy McCarthy’s loan at Bramall Lane, The Star can reveal.

The Sheffield United manager confirmed he plans to hold talks with McCarthy ahead of tomorrow’s South Yorkshire derby with Barnsley which could see his side climb to third in the League One table.

Although McCarthy has expressed reservations about being separated from his family, Palace chief Neil Warnock has reassured Clough that he is minded to rubber-stamp any agreement United can negotiate with the Irish centre-half.

“If Paddy is happy and Nigel wants him to stay then I can’t envisage that being a problem,” Warnock said. “Unless there are any major issues here then I won’t stand in the way.

“When the chance for Paddy to go to United came up, I told him what a smashing place it is and that he’d love playing there. If he’s okay and is comfortable with the situation then why not stay until January? Really, it’s down to him.

Warnock, who guided United into the top-flight eight years ago, was instrumental in helping his former employers secure McCarthy’s services on a short-term basis last month.

The 31-year-old was ineligible for selection when United beat MK Dons earlier this week to reach the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup for the first time since 2003.

But is expected to return when Barnsley, managed by Clough’s predecessor Danny Wilson, hope to end their four match winning streak in all competitions.
