Rotherham United have made French-born central defender Aymen Belaid their first permanent signing of the January transfer window.

The 27-year-old Tunisian international has agreed a two-and-a-half-year deal and goes straight into the Millers squad for tomorrow's FA Cup third-round clash at Leeds United.

Belaid, whose last club was Levski Sofia in Bulgaria, can also operate at left-back and in midfield.

He has been training with Rotherham for several weeks while the Championship club waited for his international clearance to come through.

"He is somebody who has been on the radar for a while," said manager Neil Redfearn. "Head of recruitment Gee Evans has brought him to our attention.

"A lot of clubs have shown interest in him in the British Isles. For where we need to strengthen, he's perfect. He's the right age, very athletic, and he's got pace. He's naturally left-footed. He gives you balance,

"Left-sided centre-backs are difficult to get hold of and he fills one or two roles. He can play centre-back, left-back, midfield. Obviously he is going to have to learn the level because it is tough. But he is a tough character and I think his pace, athleticism and ability to defend are going to be a real asset for us."

The Millers have terminated the contract of winger Aidy White by mutual consent. The 24-year-old, signed in the summer by previous boss Steve Evans, made 10 appearances for Rotherham and had just returned from a loan spell at League One Barnsley.
