Chesterfield suffered more home heartbreak, with a bizarre late goal condemning them to a 2-1 defeat to Oldham Athletic.

Spireites led through Ebanks-Blake’s first half strike, but failed to carry on their first half dominance after the break, as the Latics snatched three points.

The opener came after 34 fairly turgid first half minutes, Dan Gardner releasing Dan Jones down the left, his low cross eventually finding Sylvan Ebanks-Blake who rifled high into the net.

Prior to that Richard Wood’s presence in the box put Latics keeper Joel Coleman under pressure, the ball falling just wide of the upright.

At the other end set-pieces seemed Oldham’s best chance of threatening, although Tommy Lee was never troubled in a first half characterised by the wet, slippy conditions.

Oldham looked much more purposeful in the second half, Dominic Poleon increasingly involved.

But it wasn’t until the 65th minute that they brought a save worth talking about from Lee, Carl Winchester driving straight at him.

The game needed a spark and a change for the Latics did the trick - sub Giorgio Rasulo shooting at goal two minutes after his introduction, Lee saving but not holding as Poleon swept home the rebound.

The two goalscorers had chances at either end, Ebanks-Blake blasting high over the top and Poleon driving across the face of goal.

The winner came with three minutes left, and it was calamitous - Danny Philliskirk’s long range shot slipping under Lee, coming off the post and then the keeper’s back before rolling into the net.
