CHESTERFIELD defeated Oxford to take the honours with a goal in the second minute of injury time from Chris Atkinson.
United featured former Barnsley player Simon Heslop and Rotherham loanee John Mullins. Another one time Millerman, Michael Raynes, was on the bench alongside ex-Doncaster Jon-Paul Pittman backing up a starting line-up that showed three changes.
One man missing from the home side’s squad was veteran midfielder Mark Allott. The player, who sits in 12th place in the all-time club appearance list after his two spells with Chesterfield, was released yesterday, by mutual consent, as manager Cook made it clear he didn’t figure in his long term plans.
Oxford took the lead after just one minute. Hird shepherded the ball out for what everyone thought was a goal kick but the referee awarded a corner. Leven delivered to the far post where MULLINS was waiting to head home despite Togwell’s efforts on the line.
In stoppage time Whing was booked for a foul on Atkinson, a corner came from the free-kick and from that the ball bobbled around for COOPER to ram home from eighnt yards, the first Spireites goal from a corner under Cook from at the 37th attempt.
In the second minute of injury time Richards flicked on for ATKINSON to score from six yards.
