They got a valuable point at the City Ground last Saturday but today Keith Hill’s men fell to a home defeat by an impressive Southampton side.

For the Reds it was a case of Saints and sinners.

Southampton’s goal arrived just before the half hour mark and from Barnsley’s viewpoint it was a shocker.

Lallana crossed from the right,Hammond headed the ball back into the danger area and as the ball wasn’t cleared by the Barnsley defence Connolly was able to nip in and stoop low to head past Preece from just three yards out.

The Oakwell faithful began to get restless and Southampton were so much in command.

Southampton were reduced to 10 men with five minutes left for a challenge by sub Chaplow.
