Sheffield FC Futsal goalkeeper Curtis Holmes and Ollie O’Neill have again been named in the 14-man England squad for the FIFA World Cup preliminary qualifiers in Latvia later this month.
They face the host nation, Cyprus and San Marino and know that if they can top the group then that will be enough to secure a place in the main qualifying round of the competition.
If they finish in second place, there is still a chance to progress.
Meanwhile it was very much a case of job well done as Sheffield FC Futsal began the defence of their FA Futsal League North title with a 4-1 win at Liverpool.
New coach Junior Roberti’s men were starting their season a match behind all the other teams in the league due to their first game being cancelled as Leeds Futsal Club withdrew from the competition, but it didn’t take lomng for them to get into their groove.
They took the lead shortly before half-time through Richard Moore after a quick one-two with Brazilian target man Ze Souza and five minutes into the second half, Joel Rocha, who won the Best Player award at last season’s National Grand Finals, swept home from close range.
New signing, former Bosnian Under-21 international Demir Kurtovic added a third six minutes later and although the home side pulled one back, Ze Sousa restored the three goal advantage within a minute.
