CHESTERFIELD ended a strange old week with Craig Westcarr scoring and then being sent off five minutes into added time as they gained a point at Gillingham.
Under caretaker boss Tommy Wright Chesterfield took the lead, Despite Gillingham having the better of the early chances, Spireites went ahead in the 13th minute. Ahead of the goal, Lee hammered a 25 yarder that his namesake saved well, Weston drilled high from close in and Togwell had to make a solid tackle on Burton ahead of Richards hitting a 35 yard free-kick into the wall in Chesterfield’s first dangerous raid.
Whelpdale hit wide ahead of Forbes crossing in and WESTCARR slipping his marker to volley home from six yards.
Spireites’ lead lasted only eight minutes. The dangerous left sider Weston delivered an inviting cross to the far post where KEDWELL was in wait to head from close in, Lee scooped the ball away but the assistant referee ruled it had crossed the line. It was a very close call but the official was perfectly positioned.
Half-time: Gillingham 1 Chesterfield 1
