Chesterfield: Injured trip set for returns

The earlier than normal return to action - the first League’s One game is on August 3 - will see Chesterfield players report back on June 16 before jetting off to Portugal for a training camp.

Keeper Tommy Lee, who’ll miss his normal trip to Glastonbury as a result of the early start, fell awkwardly on his ankle in the week leading up to last season’s final fixture.

A recent visit to a specialist has put him back on course to return fully fit.

Player of the Year Nathan Smith has had the cast removed from his broken ankle and is swimming and using a static bike. Physio Jamie Hewitt is confident he’ll be able to fully join in with training when the players report back.

Right-back Richard Brindley had a hernia operation a couple of weeks ago and is progressing well.

Meanwhile, the Spireites’ goalkeeping area has been strengthened, with the signing of Aaron Chapman. The 22-year-old 6ft 8in keeper was formally unveiled alongside new keeper coach Eric Nixon.
