Chesterfield over came their local rivals Mansfield Town tonight, in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Northern Second Round.
Both teams have had a decent start to their League Two campaigns.
The Spireites top the division while their nearby competitors are only four places below them.
Chesterfield had lost their last two games though and needed to get back on track tonight.
Both defences were on top in the first half - forwards on both sides unable to break down their respective rearguards.
Stags had enjoyed the clearer chances but both teams went in level at half time.
Chesterfield finally broke the deadlock on 72 minutes.
Chris Porter challenged the ‘keeper for a cross, the ball slipped to Gary McSheffrey who stroked it home.
That turned out to be the defining moment of the game which had suffered a couple of delays causing 14 minutes of added time.
