It’s amazing how much difference a month can make - and fans of both Sheffield clubs should bear that in mind. Believe me, there will be more twists and turns to come.
I saw Brian Deane’s comments last week and he’s got to wear his Blades colours. For me, the recent turnaround shows the huge importance of Wednesday winning the derby at Hillsborough. A result like that can change the whole momentum of a promotion race.
Before it, United were playing far the better football. However, I’d also seen Gary Megson’s team play some good, positive stuff. Confidence is a big thing and it can go very quickly with a couple of disappointing performances. The derby win changed all that.
And if you’re going to gain momentum, there’s no finer time to get it than in the run-in.
I see some similarities with my promotion season at Hillsborough. It was Chris Turner who built the team and then Paul Sturrock who took us to promotion. Chris’s part has tended to be overlooked and, with that in mind, I feel Gary Megson will deserve a lot of credit for laying the foundations if Wednesday go on to win promotion.
Dave Jones has had some winnable games, but you can only beat what’s put in front of you and it’s interesting to see how he’s allowed the players freedom to express themselves. It’s been refreshing to watch his demeanour on the touchline. You can see his frustration when players go direct rather than playing the short, simple pass.
Jones is clearly encouraging the side to show composure and play relaxed football in what is a very tough environment, as the 2-2 draw with Walsall on Tuesday showed.
As for the fans of both clubs, well, by the definition of the word, they are fanatics. Win a game and their team is great. Lose and they’re useless. But I feel we are seeing a generation of more educated supporters now and that provides more leeway. All the same, there is a small band who blow everything out of proportion.
I’d refer them to the old cliche of keeping your feet on the ground. As I say, we haven’t seen the last of the twists and turns!
