Sheffield FC warmed up for Thursday’s Senior Cup final against Frickley Athletic at Hillsborough by closing their league campaign with a 2-0 home win over Romulus.
But poor finishing and some fine saves saw Stocksbridge Park Steels end the season with a whimper beaten 3-0 against Grantham Town at Bracken Moor.
After a goalless first half Sheffield broke the deadlock on 67 minutes with a fine goal from Joel Purkiss, hooking in a cross from the left.
Eight minutes later Purkiss turned provider, setting up Andy Gascoigne to calmly tuck away. Sheffield might have added a third but substitute Shaq McKenzie saw his volley flash wide.
At Stocksbridg Nicky Darker had the chance to give Steels a second minute lead but saw his effort blocked by Jake Turner
. Three minutes later though the visitors edged in front as Gregg Smith headed in from a corner.
Danny South and Nathan Joynes missed good chances before South’s fine effort on the turn was deflected just wide.
Nicky Swirad headed over just after the break then James Knowles’ well struck shot was hooked off the line. Grantham doubled their lead on 62 minutes when Jamie McGee shot low into the far corner.
Both teams were reduced to ten men on 77 minutes with Steels’ Matt Telling and the visitors substitute Karl Demidh seeing red after a clash. Gio Garchedi hit the third in the final minute.
Worksop Town’s caretaker manager Andy Lake will hand over to newly appointed boss Mark Shaw following a 2-0 win over Buxton that saw the Tigers beaten just once in seven games during Lake’s tenure. Scorers were Tom Denton and Kern Mille.
