Steels’ boss may expand his squad

Stocksbridge Park Steels boss Darren Schofield is happy with his squad - but more could be on the way.

Chris White, Jack Ward and Matt Telling, have signed so far. And this week Ben Turner, Chris Bettney and midfielder duo James Knowles Chris Coy became the latest players to agree new deals joining Matt Hamshaw, Danny South, Nathan Joynes, Nick Swirad, Will Senior, Anthony Tansley and goalie Ben Scott at Bracken Moor. “I’m pleased with how pre-season has gone” said Schofield.

“We have a few trialists who have done well in training but the friendlies allow us to take a closer look at them. We will only bring in new players that we feel will improve the squad.”

Steels drew 2-2 against Sheffield United U18s after coming from two goals down at the break to level through veteran Andy Ring and a trialist. Then they beat a Rotherham United X1 3-0 with goals from Chris Bettney, Nathan Joynes and Steve Hoyles.

n Sheffield FC boss Ian Whitehorne believes his team have got the goals to fire them to promotion. Club missed out on landing Jack Muldoon but Whitehorne did get Aaron Moxam from Hallam, although he is untried at Evo-Stik League level.

“Aaron will be given time to settle in” said the boss. Moxam is likely to face is former club this weekend when Sheffield host Hallam in the World’s Oldest Derby. The festival of football all starts at 1pm with a legends game climaxing in the derby itself which kicks off at 6pm.
