Maltby Main have appointed their THIRD manager of the summer following a change of chairmanship at the NCE Premier Division club that sees Brian Cusworth handed his first managerial role.
After Chris Dunn stepped down due to work commitments last season, the Miners named Martin Barnsfield as Dunn’s replacement only for Barnsfield to change his mind and remain with Millmoor Juniors. Maltby then brought in Gary Hayward, last month. However, Hayward left the club after local businessman Mark Ducker took over as Chairman. Secretary John Mills said: “There has been no fall out, it was just a case that the new chairman felt it wouldn’t work with Gary having to travelling from Nottinghamshire. He believed someone more local would be best suited to the job.”
With only three weeks to the start of the season Cusworth has been thrown in at the deep. “I always wanted to get into management but the opportunity came a little earlier than I’d expected” he said. “At 33 I was looking to play for a couple more seasons. When I was approached about taking the manager’s job I was apprehensive at first but it was too good an opportunity to turn down. There are no expectations on me, the chairman knows the situation and I’ll be given time to get used to the job. As for players, I’ll be on the phone to a few of my former managers asking for a favour or two.”
Cusworth joined Maltby as a player last season after spells at Stocksbridge, Sheffield FC and Parkgate will continue to turn out for the club in a player/manager role. Goalie Jamie Bailey, midfielder Matt Outram and striker Rob Branagan have re-signed. Paul Staniforth becomes assistant manager, while Wilf Race who takes up the role of Director of Football.
Stocksbridge boss Darren Schofield has made goalkeeper Jack Ward his second signing of the summer. Ward was registered with NCEL side Winterton Rangers last season.
“He is a young lad who is looking to prove himself and will bring competition for Ben Scott for the number one jersey,” said Schofield.
