Ten minutes into the game, Basford took a corner but, after the referee blew his whistle, Steels skipper Liam McFadyen caught the ball. The referee then pointed to the spot, and Ben Hutchinson sent David Reay the wrong way; to audible disgust from the Bracken Moor crowd.

Steels went on to lose 2-1 and boss Chris Hilton said: "I’ve been playing football for a long, long time and managing for seven years and I’ve never seen anything like it before.

"I know why the referee's blown the whistle, to take the corner. But the lad has already taken the corner and it's in our penalty area before he blows. He’s given a penalty and we’re on the back foot straightaway. I went in to see them at half time and put my point across. I think they accepted my point.

"I think they’ll hold up their hands and admit they’ve got it wrong but there’s not a lot we can do because we’re 1-0 down. I’ve never seen anything like it before. Common sense would say take the corner again.”
