Megson felt he had to reinforce a creaking back four despite the arrival of three new defenders among the five players recruited in January.

Interestingly, striker Gary Madine appears to be the sole survivor of that spending spree in terms of impacting on the new boss’s plans.

Defensive trio Michael Morrison, Mark Reynolds and Reda Johnson weren’t even on the bench as the Owls recorded a third successive home win last weekend. With midfielder Isaiah Osbourne having already returned to Aston Villa, Wednesday’s window wobble seems to underline the importance Megson places on chairman Milan Mandaric’s investment in a proper scouting set-up.
