The fixture list for Sheffield Wednesday’s 2013/14 Championship campaign may have been released yesterday - but it is still the Owls’ cup tie with Rotherham United that has captured the imagination of supporters.

The two local rivals will meet at the New York Stadium in the first round of the Capital One Cup, in the week commencing August 5.

“It should be an exciting game for both sets of supporters,” Owls chairman Milan Mandaric said.

“I haven’t been to the stadium but from what I understand it is nice.

“Rotherham are a good club and a good team. They did well last season so we are looking forward to it.”

Mandaric added: “It will not be easy because they have momentum: they had a positive outcome last season so I’m sure they will be very motivated against us.

“But we should be ready for them.”

Wednesday, meanwhile, will begin their Championship season with a trip to recently-relegated Queens Park Rangers - and Rangers manager Harry Redknapp has vowed to put his friendships with Mandaric and Dave Jones to one side.

“It’s a tough start for us,” said Harry Redknapp.

“It will be an interesting game, that’s for sure.

“I’m good friends with Dave and Milan and I’m looking forward to seeing them both.

“I wish them all the best for the season – after the opening day!

“They’re both big characters in the game and Sheffield Wednesday are a massive club with a huge following.

“I saw them beat Millwall towards the end of last season and Dave’s got them playing some good football.

n Wednesday’s fixture list is still subject to change - especially as both the Owls and Sheffield United are scheduled to play at home on the same day, October 5.
