The Owls made a dream start when Jermaine Johnson opened the scoring with a goal from the edge of the penalty box after just five minutes.
Gary Madine and Chris Sedgwick added to the tally in the first half.
Peterborough’s Craig Mackail-Smith and George Boyd fired the home side back into the game, though they trailed 3-2 at the half way stage.
A three point victory looked on the cards but that all changed when the Owls were reduced to 10 men, as Darren Potter was shown the red card for a foul on Mackail-Smith.
It took Peterborough just six minutes to take advantage of their extra man - Boyd scored his second to bring the teams level.
Then, with just six minutes on the clock, Peterborough took the lead for the time in the game when Nathaniel Mendez-Laing scored their fourth.
Four minutes into stoppage time Mackail-Smith piled on the misery for Owls fans and sealed the game with his second goal of the night to make it 5-3 in front of a crowd of just 6,480 at London Road.
