MID-table Sheffield Wednesday moved up to 14th with a 3-1 home win which relegated Swindon Town from npower League One at Hillsborough, writes Graham Walker.
Neil Mellor scored twice to add to an early Darren Potter goal with Swindon midfielder Jonathan Douglas grabbing the only goal for The Robins who are now marooned at the foot of the table.
After early Robins pressure the hosts went ahead through Potter’s deflected strike from Mellor’s lay-off.
Mellor then brilliantly headed home Jon Otsemobor’s diagonal ball before Jonathan Douglas reduced the arrears, rifling home superbly from long range.
Mellor notched his brace after a swift one-two with Gary Madine as the hosts held out for a comfortable victory.
For Swindon, who have won just eight league matches all season, the drop to League Two marks a swift downfall from the heights of reaching the League One play-off final in the last campaign.
The Robins return to the bottom tier of league football for the first time since 2006-07.
