GARY Megson admits that he is heading into the unknown as the Owls prepare to enter the transfer market.

His naming privately to chairman Milan Mandaric of six targets is only a start.

He is keeping an open mind and cannot be sure what the summer will bring.

The Owls manager explained: “There are six names but there are also positions that we need to strengthen. You have to have different options. There’s nothing set in stone.

“It’s important to be open minded. Something could come about that at the moment we’re not aware of.”

Clubs have yet to reveal which players they are keeping and releasing, and the market will be influenced by these decisions.

Megson will also have back-up plans if he cannot land all his six targets.

“These names are only a start of the process, to see if we can do anything with them. There may also be clubs who are interested in some of our players,” he said.

“You have an ideal, but rarely does it come about. At the moment, the only certainty in my mind is that if we go with what we’ve got now we won’t get to where we want to be.”

Megson, preparing for today’s Hillsborough clash with Exeter, is challenging Neil Mellor to maintain the form that has earned him the League One Player of the Month award:

“Every team needs a goalscorer and Neil has proved he is capable of that by scoring 20 goals this season,” he said.

“He had a really good month in April, scoring six goals, and has shown his best form since I joined the club in February.

“Neil has set that standard; now it is up to him to maintain it.”
