Sheffield Wednesday: Back injury costs Sam Hutchinson his Owls place

Boss Carlos Carvalhal has said defender Sam Hutchinson missed Saturday’s home loss to Brighton and Hove Albion due to injury.

“Sam was ready on Friday but he felt a pain on the back and we didn’t want to take a risk because if he had played, maybe he would have had to come off after 10 or 15 minutes,” explained Carvalhal.

Hutchinson, who suffered the knock in last week’s triumph at Blackburn Rovers, was replaced by club captain Glenn Loovens.

Despite watching Brighton pick up maximum points at S6 for the first time in 18 visits and more than a century, Carvalhal refused to be downhearted with the Owls’ display.

“I’m unhappy with the score but I’m not unhappy with my players,” stressed the Portuguese chief, who brought on academy graduate Cameron Dawson at half-time for the injured Keiren Westwood. “They never gave up and fought to the last second.

“I’m not concerned about anything. I think we have done well in the last few games. We did a very good month in September and went up near the top positions. We are not far away from.

“We lost against a strong team but I don’t think they are better than us. Brighton are one of the strongest teams in the competition but we didn’t deserve to lose.

“In this competition, it can’t be the end of the world when you lose one game. The teams are very balanced. The little details can make a big difference.”

Almen Abdi was not involved due to flu.
