Fans favourite Tom Lees has described the 2014/15 season as the best year of his career.

The centre-back, signed for an undisclosed fee from Leeds United last summer, has played an instrumental role in Sheffield Wednesday recording 19 clean sheets in all competitions this season.

Stand-in Owls captain Lees said: “As a defender, you get judged on your clean sheets and stats as a defensive unit. If you look at it that way, I would probably say it has been the best year of my career.”

While he is happy with the contribution he has made to Wednesday’s cause, Lees hopes to open his goal-scoring account in the final three Championship fixtures.

“It is definitely a target to get on the score-sheet,” he said. “I do find I get on the end of things from corners and set plays and tend to put them across goal.

“It is something I do need to work on and add to my game.”

The 24-year-old said he was satisfied the Owls picked up four points from their Hillsborough double-header against Charlton Athletic and Brentford. However, Lees claims the team must learn to be more consistent if they are to compete for a play-off spot next season.

He said: “If you had asked me before the two games, I would have maybe taken four points.

“Brentford are a prime example of a team who, although they didn’t the win the game, I think that will be their level of performance every week. They can bank on knowing they will play like that every game whereas I don’t think you can say eight or nine times out of 10 that we will give the performance we produced against Brentford so we have to work on that.”
