Forward Jacques Maghoma - one of 11 senior players released by Sheffield Wednesday earlier this month - is on Birmingham City’s radar.
Maghoma worked with Blues boss Gary Rowett at Burton Albion before moving to Hillsborough nearly two years ago. The DR Congo international claimed 18 goals in the 2012/13 season as the Brewers finished fourth in League Two before losing in the play-off semi-finals to Bradford City. Maghoma’s impressive form led to him being named in the League Two team of the season.
Rowett would have loved to have retained Maghoma’s services but recognised that the former Tottenham Hotspurs trainee, who can be deployed on either flank or up front, fancied a fresh challenge.
Rowett, who is now preparing to embark on his first summer transfer window at Birmingham, said: “Jacques came up with a little bit of magic more often than not.”
The 27-year-old struggled for consistency in Wednesday colours, hitting just four goals in 66 appearances. Although Maghoma created several goals for his teammates last year, he found the back of the net only once and his decision-making in the final third quite often let him down.
Wednesday’s development squad, meanwhile, will travel to Gainsborough Trinity for a pre-season friendly on July 30, kick-off 7pm.
