Sheffield Wednesday: Carlos Carvalhal hails the buzz around Hillsborough

Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal believes any Hillsborough negativity that may have hung around since last season has been banished.

The Owls’ home form was desperately poor in the last campaign, with only the three relegated teams - Blackpool, Wigan and Millwall - performing worse on their own turf.

However, ahead of the visit of pre-season promotion contenders Middlesbrough, Carvalhal says he thinks the fans have bought into what the team are trying to achieve and the players themselves are feeding off that that positivity.

“(The players) want to play because they are happy to play at Hillsborough in front of our fans,” he said. “As coach, I am feeling they don’t have any type of fear or complex because they don’t have a positive environment. It is the opposite, they are waiting for the game. Also, we know we need an effort of energy from our fans.

“This is very important for Saturday. If we have this type of energy from our Massive fans we can be happy.”

On their latest challenge, Carvalhal added: “This will be a match where we need to be patient. (Middlesbrough) are compact, very solid. They will stay in a position and wait for a ball to try to score. The fans must understand the teams that close very well have very good organisation. We can’t start to just put long balls and wait to be lucky situation.”
