Cameron Dawson’s stock continues to rise as he produced another accomplished performance in Wednesday’s loss to Derby County.

The rookie shot-stopper started for the second Championship match on the spin after regular No 1 Keiren Westwood failed to recover from e back injury.

Although he was powerless to stop either of the Rams’ goals, Dawson’s decision-making and handling under pressure was superb. When called upon, the 21-year-old, a lifelong Owls fan, made a number of important saves.

“Cameron did well,” said head coach Carlos Carvalhal.

“We are happy with him and all of our goalkeepers.”

It remains unclear when Wednesday No 1 Westwood will return to action.

Carvalhal, who confirmed club captain Glenn Loovens missed out due to illness, said: “Westwood did a scan; he mentioned that he still felt pain but we are analysing day by day.”

Striker Steven Fletcher, a second-half substitute, will be assessed after being forced off with a head injury.

The Scotland international collided with Derby’s Darren Bent and his wound required several stitches.

Carvalhal said: “The way that he [Fletcher] plays is very brave. He is a gladiator. I must just say that I was very worried about him because he is a fighter.

“He got into that situation because he is a fighter.

“He saved a situation for us.

“To us it was not good either because the impact of that substitution was almost nil because the player played very few minutes.”
