George Hirst will be hoping to get the opportunity to add to his impressive goalscoring tally tonight when England take on Cuba in their second game of the Toulon Tournament.
The Young Lions are currently top of their group having gained a hard-fought 1-0 win over Angola on Monday night in Aubgane, thanks to a goal from Chelsea forward Ike Ugbo.
Hirst came off the bench and replaced matchwinner Ugbo for the final 15 minutes and will now be hoping to nail down a starting role for the second of England’s group games.
Cuba opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Japan - who England take on, on Sunday - and victory for Neil Desnip’s side in this game at Stade d’Honneur Marcel Roustan in Salon-de-Provence would almost certainly ensure their progression into the knock-out stages as group winners.
Hirst has been in superb goalscoring form all season at almost every level he has played at.
The 18 year-old son of former Owls favourite, David, made two first team appearances in the season just past.
It was at underage level that he impressed most, though, scoring 16 goals in 22 under 23 appearances.
The talented teenager also found the net 15 times in 19 under 18 games this season.
The performances for Wednesday had caught the eye of international selectors and Hirst scored five goals in eight games for the Young Lions.
Sheffield United’s David Brooks is also in the squad and could gain a start for tonight’s game.
Meanwhile, the EFL have announced that the fixture list for the 2017/18 season will be released on June 21.
This coming campaign will see the return of the Sheffield derby following the Blades’ promotion from League One at the sixth time of asking.
