Sheffield Wednesday manager Dave Jones is baffled why some players on the periphery of his squad have opted to stay at Hillsborough instead of going out on loan to enhance their reputations.

Jones is eager to bring in further reinforcements to help Wednesday climb away from the lower reaches of the Championship table.

Midfielder Seyi Olofinjana, a big hit on loan with the Owls last season, continues to train with the club. But Jones has told The Star that he needs to move players out before he can strengthen his squad. Wednesday are still searching for their first win and clean sheet this season. Jones’ troops are currently 22nd in the standings.

“We have some people who just want to stay here,” he said. “I find it amazing that players are like that. It really does baffle me.

“There seems to be a lot of players in the game at the moment who would rather stay where they are than go out and play. As an ex-player myself, I find it difficult to get my head around that.”

Owls Under-18s, meanwhile, lost 2-1 against Brentford yesterday despite taking the lead through Sean Mullan.
