Sheffield Wednesday, who last night signed Arsenal goalkeeper Damian Martinez on loan, have been rocked by the news that David Prutton faces four to six weeks on the sidelines.

Owls boss Dave Jones said the experienced midfielder, who has not featured since their 4-1 thumping at Birmingham City last month, damaged his ankle yesterday morning in training. The 32-year-old, an influential figure in Wednesday’s successful bid to avoid the drop last season, is unlikely to return to action until the end of November.

Prutton’s injury setback is another blow Wednesday, lying currently in 22nd position in the Championship, could have done without ahead of their trip to Bolton Wanderers this weekend.

But Jones has bolstered his goalkeeping department by capturing Martinez on a one-month loan deal. Argentinean Martinez, aged 21, has made just two first-team starts for the Gunners. Both of his run-outs came in the Capital One Cup.

Martinez impressed Jones in Wednesday’s behind closed doors friendly at Manchester City last Friday and has been brought in to keep Owls No 1 Chris Kirkland on his toes.
