Caolan Lavery’s season has not yet ended after the Sheffield Wednesday striker was named in the latest Northern Ireland squad today.

The 22-year-old, who has previously represented Northern Ireland at Under-19 and Under-21 level, will be looking to win his first cap when Michael O’Neill’s side take on Qatar in a friendly at Crewe’s Gresty Road on Sunday May 31.

Lavery started all of the Owls’ final seven Championship matches following a productive loan spell at Chesterfield. He came off the bench to score in Wednesday’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Rotherham United and was also on target against Charlton Athletic.

Lavery said: “I’m delighted to have been selected in the squad and it’s a big honour for me.

“Making my debut for the senior national team is the next goal on my list.

“I’m looking forward to getting on the plane to meet up with the boys and be involved one way or another.”

Former Owls midfielder Chris Brunt and ex-Rotherham United loanee Daniel Lafferty have been selected in the 28-man squad.

After locking horns with Qatar, O’Neill’s troops entertain Romania at Windsor Park in a crucial European Championship 2016 qualifier on Saturday June 13.
