DANNY Pugh is confident loan duo Leroy Lita and Connor Wickham can propel Sheffield Wednesday towards Championship safety.
The Owls fired a blank in Saturday’s televised defeat to in-form Nottingham Forest, which was just their second loss in 13 league matches.
Despite their im-
proved form, Wednesday remain just four points above the drop zone and, after tonight’s clash at Watford, Wednesday travel to fifth-placed Leicester City before welcoming table-topping Cardiff City to Hillsborough.
It is a crucial period for Dave Jones side but utility man Pugh feels they have got the firepower required to get out of trouble.
Lita has three goals in six appearances since arriving on a temporary basis from Swansea while Wickham, on loan from Sunderland, is still looking to open his Owls account.
Pugh said: “They are going to be vital for us. Leroy came in at the same time as I did and he has been different
class. Leroy is a big threat. He is not the biggest lad but he is strong and he is uncomfortable for defenders to play against.
“He is a pest in training. You don’t like to play against him because if he gets half a chance he will score.
“We have seen glimpses of how good Connor can be. He can hold the ball up and has good feet. It is not just about him scoring. His link-up play with Leroy is good.
“Connor is up there with the talent I have seen at that age. You can see he is going to be a top player. He is knocking the goals in for fun in training. Maybe he’s not had the service he requires so far in matches.”
But Pugh added: “We can’t just rely on those two. We have all got to chip in.”
