Versatile forward Chris Maguire and goalkeeper Chris Kirkland have played their last matches for Sheffield Wednesday, The Star can confirm.

The duo are searching for new clubs, having turned down the Owls’ contract offers.

Along with Kieran Lee, Jose Semedo and captain Glenn Loovens, the Championship club wanted to retain Maguire and Kirkland’s services.

However, sources close to Maguire have disclosed that he rejected their reduced-terms one-year deal last month while Kirkland fancies a new challenge, having struggled to dislodge Keiren Westwood in between the sticks.

It is understood Maguire would have considered extending his stay had he been offered a longer contract. Ultimately, neither Wednesday nor Maguire’s representatives could come to an agreement and the player looks set to move on to pastures new.

As reported by this newspaper, Maguire held talks with Bolton Wanderers over a possible move last month. He has also recently been linked with Leeds United.

Recruited for an undisclosed fee from Derby Country three years ago, Maguire represented the Owls 92 times in all competitions, hitting 19 goals, including eight last term as they finished 13th.

Kirkland made 91 appearances, making eight starts during the 2014-15 season.

Young centre-back Brad Beatson, meanwhile, has agreed a one-year deal.
