Left-back Joe Mattock could figure in tonight’s Development League fixture with Barnsley as he continues his comeback from a knee injury.
The former Leicester City trainee, who has not featured since Sheffield Wednesday’s Championship curtain-raiser at Queens Park Rangers, has recently resumed trained and may be given a run-out at Hillsborough, kick-off 7pm. Striker Chris Maguire may also play some part in the South Yorkshire derby after shaking off a toe niggle.
Manager Dave Jones has told The Star that he hopes Mattock will be pressing hard for a first-team place after the two-week international break.
“We want all our injured players back,” admitted Jones. “It will be nice to have Joe back as we don’t have the biggest squad. We need to get him games as he hasn’t played since the first game of the season.”
Mattock’s return is a timely boost to the Owls, who are still sweating on the fitness of captain Reda Johnson. The defender sustained a groin problem in the 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town last weekend and is being assessed by Wednesday’s medical staff.
