For head coach Carlos Carvalhal, having a big squad is a help, not a hindrance.

Wednesday take on a rejuvenated Blackburn Rovers this afternoon boasting a plethora of options in all departments.

Given the Owls’ busy December programme, which will see them play seven times in 28 days, Carvalhal is relieved their injuries have started to clear up.

Winger Modou Sougou, an unused substitute against Huddersfield Town, and Alex Lopez are available for selection again.

Michael Turner and Barry Bannan are also edging closer to first-team returns after recovering from knee problems, although the Ewood Park encounter will come too soon for the duo.

“Michael [Turner] is very near to coming back and so is Barry [Bannan],” said Carvalhal. “They will be back soon. It is a question of a few days.

“Barry is back running on the pitch but he is not 100 per cent. He is not ready for this game.”

Carvalhal has a number of players in fine form and pushing for starting berths, including Portuguese international Lucas Joao, who sparkled as a second half sub versus Huddersfield.

“It is not a problem having lots of players to choose from,” Carvalhal told The Star. “It is not a headache for me as we have a good team with good personalities.

“The headache for me was when we had 14 players training and two goalkeepers last week. We have a lot of games so we need a full squad and all the players pushing (for places).”
