Sunderland and Wednesday today announced that Connor Wickham’s Hillsborough loan has been extended.
The in-form striker will remain with the Owls up to and including the away game against Millwall on January 28.
Tomorrow’s home match against Blackpool was due to be his last.
Wednesday revealed earlier that Glenn Loovens has signed for the rest of the season, after his initial one-month deal expired on Sunday.
Fans will welcome today’s news, with Loovens having looked a class act in defence and Wickham having been the team’s main striker, with six goals in eight games.
Caretaker boss Stuart Gray indicated after Wickham scored the equaliser at Charlton on Sunday that the 20-year-old wanted to stay and the Owls’ relationship with Sunderland was good.
Wickham’s goal-scoring prowess is seen as important to Wednesday’s attempt to climb from the Championship’s bottom three.
