The draw for the first round of the Capital One Cup has thrown up an unexpected cash bonus for both Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham United.

Normally, this initial stage of the competition doesn’t attract much of a gate and, for Championship clubs travelling to a club from a lower division, not much to get excited about.

But when the Owls make their first ever visit to the New York Stadium on the season’s first midweek date, it will be a local ‘occasion’ with a 12,000 full house generating in excess of £150,000 in gate receipts. So, both clubs will get a handy ‘cut’, far more than they’d normally expect at this stage.

Although the visit of Harry Redknapp’s QPR to Exeter looks a banker for live tv, there must be every chance this South Yorkshire derby clash could be second choice - Sky choose Wednesday’s trip to Oldham as one of the two at the same stage stage last season.

If that should happen then the tv fee - it was £75,000 last season - would be an additional financial boost.

“It’s a good one really, exciting for the area and not far for our fans to travel,” said Wednesday chief executive Paul Aldridge. “And a local derby in these circumstances always generates extra interest.”
