SHEFFIELD Wednesday are understood to have made an inquiry about Derby County striker Chris Maguire and are being strongly linked with young Portuguese midfielder Diogo Amado.
The 23-year-old Maguire joined Derby a year ago from Aberdeen but didn’t hold down a regular place and spent the final months of the season on loan at Portsmouth.
Maguire arrived at Pride Park for a compensation fee believed to be worth £400,000, but any Wednesday bid is unlikely to have been close to that.
The Owls have noted that Maguire is one of several players available at Derby as Nigel Clough looks to shuffle his squad and, in the process, bring in funds.
It is likely that Derby’s valuation is higher than what Wednesday are believed to have tested the water with.
Maguire is regarded as a “second” striker rather than a target man.
Unable to make a real breakthrough at Derby, he went to Portsmouth and did well in 11 games in a side that was on its way to relegation.
Pompey boss Michael Appleton is understood to be interested in keeping him.
Wednesday are keen on under-21 international Amado and he could link up with fellow countryman and Owls Player of the Year Jose Semedo. The 22-year-old central midfielder began his career, like Semedo, at Sporting Lisbon but never played for them.
He was on loan from Uniao Leiria last season at Estoril.
