Sheffield Wednesday will spend a week in Portugal as part of their pre-season build-up.

Dave Jones is taking the squad to the same Algarve base that they used last year. The Owls will play a Premier League side and a team from Portugal’s top division, or two leading Portuguese sides.

Details have yet to be announced but the trip is due to start on July 14.

Players will report back for work on June 27, staff a few days earlier than that.

The Football League fixtures will be announced on June 19 and the season will start on August 3 - a fortnight earlier than this season’s kick-off. This will mean an extra Saturday date.

Wednesday are in talks with possible shirt sponsors but have rejected a big offer from a money-lending company which it felt did not fit in with the club’s community ethic.

The Capital One Cup first round will switch back to the more usual schedule, with the cup starting during the midweek that follows the first league match.
