Wednesday today announced a partnership with rugby league club Sheffield Eagles.
The clubs’ community staffs will work together to put on activites for youngsters and vulnerable people, raise funds and attract students to their matches: ticket deals will be offered in a link-up with the city’s universities.
The Eagles begin their league season on Sunday (2pm) against Rochdale at Owlerton Stadium, where they played their inaugural game in 1984.
Owls development manager Spencer Taylor said: “The SWFC community programme is delighted to be working alongside the Sheffield Eagles.
“Bringing together the Sheffield Wednesday brand with that of such a prestigious rugby club will allow us to unlock new funding, launch new initiatives and ensure the local community benefits from the expertise of both organisations.”
Ian Anniss, head of community, development and education for the Eagles, said: “Sheffield Wednesday are a club with a huge reputation and, like us, carry out fantastic work in the community - I can see this partnership going from strength to strength.
“It would be wonderful to get the support of Wednesday fans as we land back in S6 next Sunday when we take on Rochdale in our first match back at Owlerton.”
